In Broad Daylight (1991)

“In Broad Daylight” (1991) is a true story I discovered through a sort of documentary I was watching called “20 U.S. Towns So Weird You’ll Swear They Can’t Be Real.” Right in the middle of the documentary there is a segment about a town called Skidmore, Missouri. In Skidmore there was a fella named Kenneth Rex McElroy who was the town bully. He stole livestock from neighbors, raped women and children, intimidated folks with threats and shotguns and was generally unpleasant to be around. The law enforcement in the town didn’t do a damn thing to stop him, of course. Eventually, when things were getting out of control, the townsfolk took the law in to their own hands and on July 10, 1981 Ken McElroy, age 47, wound up with a bullet lodged in his brains. There were 60 eyewitnesses to the shooting and not one of them said they saw who shot McElroy. The case is unsolved to this day.

They changed the names around in the movie “In Broad Daylight” but it is definitely about McElroy. No one portrays a bully better than Brian Dennehy, who also stars as a bully cop in “First Blood” (1982) and as John Wayne Gacy in “To Catch a Killer” (1992). Dennehy is super hateable in “In Broad Daylight” and it is a role that he was meant to portray. Marcia Gay Harden plays the role of “Len Rowan’s” (character based on McElroy) wife “Adina.” Harden does a great job in the role. I was wishing that “Adina” was punished for her crimes as well.

Anywho, it’s a great movie and well worth a watch. 4 and a half stars.
