“The Verdict” (1982)

I’ve been looking for this one online for years and I finally found it. Even though I’ve seen it at least 10 times it never fails to impress. Paul Newman delivers a magnificent performance as “Attorney Frank Galvin.” Newman’s courtroom summation is like a masterclass in acting. This was when Newman was at his absolute peak as an actor. Along with “The Verdict,” Newman has made many incredible films including “Somebody Up There Likes Me” (1956), “The Hustler” (1961), “Cool Hand Luke” (1967), “Slap Shot” (1977), “Fort Apache, The Bronx” (1981) and “Absence of Malice” (1981).

Expertly directed by Sidney Lumet and written by David Mamet, the all star cast in “The Verdict” give sublime and riveting performances. Charlotte Rampling, Jack Warden, James Mason and Lindsay Crouse are all superb. James Handy portrays “Kevin Doneghy,” the husband of the victim’s sister. Handy as “Doneghy” gives a fantastic performance in the courthouse after he finds out “Galvin” turned down $210,000 for a settlement. It’s one of the most memorable scenes in the film. James Handy died on June 3, 2026 after he was stabbed by his girlfriend’s son.

Anywho, If you’ve never seen “The Verdict” you really should. It’s brilliant. 5 stars, of course.
