One Flew Over The Cuco’s Nest

Author: Meow

…suck ass.

Just paid £8 (watched it with a friend on a big TV instead of for free on here on my phone 🙂) for this absolute overrated garbage. The first hour seems like the author wants you to like and feel bad for the main character despite him being a bad person (and if you look online, it’s clear people do like him). There’s a few scenes that subtly show Nurse Ratchets sadistic nature, but most scenes are literally just crazy people doing silly stuff. Some people try and call these scenes ways McMurphy is showing his desire for freedom, but there’s no way we need, what, 30 whole fucking minutes to catch on?

And oh my god, people really act like Nurse Ratchet is the reincarnation of satan himself. Yeah, she definitely was pretty evil but nowhere near as evil as y’all made her seem. Then Billy ends his life at the end, but since the movie doesn’t really try to connect you with him, and instead just presents him as “vulnerable guy that stutters”, it’s hard to feel super sad unlike how you would feel for a character like Daisy from Girl Interrupted (that movie actually has a personality and backstory for each character without making the explanations 1 hour long each.)

Same. I just finished it and I do not understand the hype.

It wasn’t deep. It wasn’t well shot. It wasn’t an allegory for how the mentally ill are treated. Jack has little (read: no) development. The acting was good, but that doesn’t make it some classic. It’s not eerie. Playing a song that doesn’t match the tone to create dissonance is such weak skill. I expect so much more from a movie with any star power, let alone all this hype. How is this a comedy? Is it the same audience that idolizes The Joker? You could cut out 90% of that movie and it would be unchanged.

Seriously pissed I wasted my money on this overyhyped movie…

I understand it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I believe one of the biggest reasons why so many people like this movie is because they can relate to having the likes of Nurse Ratched in their lives – a person who is very controlling, manipulative, and calculating, all the while maintaining a highly professional persona. In other words, an antagonist who is more grounded in reality. McMurphy is a morally gray character who sees right through this persona of Ratched’s, but I believe that’s the point. Nobody would be really interested in a protagonist who isn’t flawed or possess traits of altruism. If he were a goody-two-shoes, it wouldn’t really make much of an impact, because the audience knows what to expect from him the moment he establishes himself in the movie. I believe the movie does a good job of showing what happens when a not-so-good person comes face-to-face with somebody they perceive as even worse, in a system that is already working against their favor. Another major key point are the differing perspectives of the inside world of the ward between the characters and the audience. We, the audience, at least mostly, know Ratched is a villainous steel-cladded bitch who is very good at feigning hospitality, but the likes of her peers believe she is the Mother Teresa of the ward and even a good deal of the patients there. In fact, there is no doubt that some people out there in real life who have a… Read more »
