Shooters Are Masochists

most shooters are composed of young men in their twenties with a limited to nonexistent social life, but a great online presence. I think that the subconscious drive of these men is of a sexual nature with an inability to show itself due to their poor social skills. Their sexual frustration, paired with other issues of course, culminates in the release of their libido through the completion of the massacre they’ve been fantasizing about for months.

When seeing their online posts, we see an increase and intensification of the fantasy being described in more and more details until the very last few days where the shooter proudly exclaims that he can barely control himself at the thought of finally achieving his dream. This very clearly (perhaps too well) parallels someone getting close to climaxing after fantasizing about a sexual act for a while.

Another interesting thing about a good deal of these men is that they fantasize about killing people and the thrill and power this would give them, only to end the story with the police shooting them. This aligns perfectly with their posts online going from the pleasure they would get of seeing people scared of them and taking revenge on the world that hurt them, only for the next post a few hours later being about their desire for someone to simply shoot them because they’re worthless.

It’s always the police (an authority figure) punishing them. So in other words they want to punish society for what it did to them, only for the enforcers of the law of said society to end up punishing them ultimately. Even in their own fully controlled fantasies they end up losing, which shows the extent of their masochism. The best fit to analyze said masochism would be Lacan, who believed that all sadists were in actuality masochists exteriorizing it unto others, which is the case in those scenarios.
