Has anyone ever noticed a dog’s tendency to be more likely to lick up it’s own vomit, yet pass on cleaning up it’s own drool. The curiosity occurred to me earlier after feeding my own dog a treat. She had vomited early this morning and even before the nastiness could hit the floor, she sucked it back up immediately and swallowed! A good three inches of it came out and then disappeared back inside. Kind of like when you spit slowly downwards maintaining the connection from lips to string of spittle, then suck it back up. What? It’s not something I do but… you know, I see and hear things.
But seriously though… that, in and of itself, was curious because she’s never done that before. She’s never held it in, opting to go lick it up AFTER it hit the floor. It was odd, for sure. Maybe after watching me clean up her previous purgings, she now feels guilty. So, she now sucks it back up before it becomes a mess? I don’t know. I’ve never scolded her for vomiting, so it’s curious indeed.
Or maybe it’s the easiest answer. She just wants to eat vomit and is now doing it before I get the chance to clean it up. I won’t allow her to lick it up, so it makes the most sense. Haha! Yeah, that’s probably it.
But I say all of that for context. After giving her a treat, she drooled a little on the rug. With the earlier vomiting in mind, I pointed to the spot of drool and asked, “Well, aren’t you gonna clean that up?” She lowers her head a little, looks at it then back up to me then walks away. Nah, probably not, huh? So, I continue the one-sided conversation questioning her about the logic of it all, picking my dog’s brain for some enlightenment. Why vomit and not drool? Is it because the former tastes better than the latter? Is one’s texture preferred over the other? I can definitely see how vomit would taste better. But sometimes her vomit doesn’t contain any food. It’s just bile, assumingly. Yet, she’s always keen to lap that RIGHT up! Or she attempts to, at least. And bile’s acidic as hell, right?
As far as drool goes, it’s comparatively bland. It’s essentially like our own saliva. I wouldn’t be too prone to lick up my own spit either, now that I think about it. So, to be fair, I can’t reasonably expect her to. And saliva really only has two purposes anyways: the pre-digestion of food and sex/masturbation lubricant. Or in rare cases, it can be combined with some good ol’ throat mucus and then launched as a slimey projectile onto vehicles that park in the bike lane. Not that I’VE ever done that but… just sayin’.
So, vomit versus drool. Any thoughts on the matter? It doesn’t even have to be respective to canines in particular. Maybe you just like vomit and want to tell the world. Well, here’s your chance. Your soapbox awaits, aspiring orators! Personally, I abhor the stuff and am always so eager to get it the hell out of me then leave it there –only cleaning up when and if necessary. But if that’s your thing? Hey, go right ahead. I’m just some schmuck and don’t really give a shit.

There are not many rules on here but no-links is one of them.
I gave you 5 🩸 I like your easy breezy writing style, and your excellent word use and vocabulary. It appeals to me. Plus it’s coherent especially for this site, with an original and unique subject, and most importantly, it’s just a bit wierd but sentimental. Which I always enjoy. I also love animals and have had and still have many that I’m thrilled to live life with. So I think you’re asking a good question (see my answer below, cause I actually have the actual answer you actually seek). In conclusion, brava to you 👏🏼.
It has to do with the canine animals’s innate, survival instinct, left over in them from their wolf ancestors. In the wild, before they became the domesticated pets of today, if they vomited up food particles, they’d re-eat it so as not to lose valuable caloric intake needed to maintain body weight for survival. Especially in winter when food sources were more scarce and they burned more energy staying warm. Drool on the other hand, well it doesn’t have any caloric properties, it’s just nasty ass drool. So, that’s why both cats and dogs have been known to eat up vomit and some dogs will eat đź’© shit for the same reason. But never drool. I learned about this watching animal shows and docs. I watch a lot of animal docs actually. Because of my love of animals. In fact I’ve often preferred to be with animals over some people. When I was a kid we had a Jackweenie named Skipper (who I adored) that would eat my cat Ruffles’ (who I equally adored) vomit AND her litter pan shits. I had to constantly keep him out of a designated “litter pan room” (this was years before self cleaning litter pans were invented which is all we use now) or he’d have a kitty poop snack… then vomit it up, then eat it again, then poop it out, then eat THAT again, and round and round he’d go. I swear he ate the same vomit poop meal 5 different ways.… Read more »
Nitter has returned. Elon did some law-fare and Found out that even though he is massively rich he can not stop free speech. Maybe he should stick to paying women millions to have his babies whilst spouting ethno-nationalistic guff.
Hey Admin, can you stick this question mark (?) at the end of that first sentence? I didn’t realize it until after posting.
Eh, you know what? Forget it. If someone wants to critique that, then it’s no skin off my dick. Besides, the potential here for hilarious comments is always great. I wouldn’t want to fuck that up by being a stickler about punctuation.
Thanks for the approval, by the way.
It is about time that thought-crimes were applied to cats.
