I’m so done pretending I don’t think all, yes ALL, religious people lack basic thinking skills…
I grew up in a Christian area, kinda. Had to do the whole Jesus birth thing play and all that. But even when I was 5 fucking years old I didn’t believe in it. And you’re telling me full grown adults are believing it?

I also saw a homophobic person today saying god doesn’t love lesbians, and that god loves him because he’s straight. I asked him if the voices also love him.
And why are these gods always men? Women are the ones that carry an ugly ass baby in their tummies for months.
I truly just hate religion as a whole. It pisses me off when an atheist says some shit like “I don’t believe, but I respect it!” SHUT THE FUCK UP! You are just aa dumb. Religion holds people back from learning.
You can argue with me all you want. But even if you told me a some religious twat had an IQ of 300, I’d still believe they’re an idiot.

I just watched Mysterious Skin and was immediately reminded of an exceptionally entertaining / thought provoking lecture on how people come to believe they’ve been abducted by aliens. (“Abducted: How People Come to Believe They Were Kidnapped by Aliens – Susan Clancy” …YouTube (~50min).) There isn’t really a definite argument she is trying to convince people of, because of the consequences for her personal life the scandalous nature of the subject matter caused, so she mostly poses questions, I think…but, her research was basically catalyzed by a debate over whether “false memories” can be imputed to people under hypnosis in therapy, which (potentially) led people in the 80’s and 90’s to more or less collude with their therapists in a confirmation that the perceived “reality” of satanic ritual abuse / alien abduction experiences really did happen. Because of the cultural proliferation of stories like aliens and satanists, people retroactively adopt these “explanations” not only to make sense of unthinkable trauma (or random strangeness like sleep paralysis), but also to make meaning in their lives (which the unexplainable can jeopardize, for some). Interspersed throughout the lecture is discussion about how religion basically serves the same purpose/s. Interesting stuff, pretty basic if you think about it. So I’m not religious, but my sister is one of the most devout catholics EVER. Like, she’s insane. Guess what? She became a nun, and then they kicked her out. They said they didn’t think she was “a good mental fit.” ERM…God is supposed to love everyone who’s “good”, right? Does everything right, RIGHT? I think they just kicked her out cause shes super super autistic. But like…what the fuck. Isn’t that against their mission statement or whatever? Fucking hypocrites.
Totally agree, I grew up in an area where there were a lot of different religions practised (mainly South Asian) and so early on I never had the mindset that the religion was this absolute truth.
People break out in fights over religion all the time there. It absolutely holds us back. It’s primitive and very patriarchal and people (esp women) are killed/harmed unnecessarily over it.
I had to learn about Buddhism for GCSE RS and the Buddha LEAVES HIS WIFE AND NEWBORN CHILD to go sit under a tree and think about being empathy instead of practising it by raising his son and he’s considered a religious hero?? What flaming bullshit.
Most schools in the England teach about Islam instead of Buddhism, but it would’ve been volatile to do so in my area bc of all the Hindus and Sikhs.
However I like the approach to religion where people will celebrate religious holidays like Christmas, Easter, Pancake Day etc and then just not care about it any other day. That’s all I can tolerate.
There can be some real fucking idiots who blindly follows religion without question. Ever heard of that guy who tried to reach an island of natives to give them his teachings? They nearly killed him and he was lucky to get out alive. You could say that was a warning from God, but obviously that wasn’t enough for him. He had to push his luck and return the next day to try again which resulted in him getting killed by the natives. There can be manipulative sociopathic scumbags who hides behind religion and weaponizes it. Pedophiliac preists and tide embezzlers. There can be people who has read every single verse in the bible and not understand a damn thing about it. And then there are people who has never been to church, never picked up a bible, but turn out to be more of a Christian, a believer than the so-called ones who forcibly tries to shove their religion down the throats of those whose ideals do not align with their own, the ones who treats the church as more of a mean girls club than a house of god. It is more of a matter of making one’s own choice to believe and find closure rather than having some fancy ass religious upbringing, indoctrination, or being manipulated into being a believer that truly defines their connection with religion.
