OMH’s Rating System Explained

Author: Old Mother Hubbard

Before I reveal my “Old Mother Hubbard’s Top 100 Favorite Films on EUM” list sometime next week, I wanted to give an explanation of my rating system.

There will be some movies that I have rated “5 stars” that will NOT be in my top 100 and there are some movies that are rated “4 stars” (or maybe even less) that WILL be in my top 100 and let me tell you why.

1. OMH’s “5 star” ratings result from a consideration of many factors including scripts, cinematography, musical scores, acting and other technical factors. Of course I really like a film if I give it a “5 star” rating.

2. Even though some films may not have the best in production and may have received a “4 star” rating (or even lower), they may make it in to my top 100 list due to the fact that they moved me or “stuck with me” long after viewing. A good example is the film “Compliance” (2012) which is in my top 30. Although I gave that film “4 stars” I thought about that film for a really long time after I saw it, knowing that it was a true story and after I found out that the film is almost a “play-by-play” account of what really happened.

Anywho, I hope this clears things up if people notice different ratings in my reviews for movies that are in my “Old Mother Hubbard’s Top 100 Favorite Films on EUM” list.

Thanks for listening and enjoy your holiday!
